Wood Block Picture
Here's how to create your own wood block picture. I used a print out of a photograph but you could use any image from a magazine, photograph, book, wrapping paper etc.
It makes a pretty tile or coaster for a table or counter top. You could also add a hanger to the back to display on a wall.
Materials
Laser print of a photo (note inkjet print may smudge) or other cut out of a paper image from magazine, book etc.
Square of MDF or other wood the size you want your finished block to be.
Black paint
Mod Podge (or try PVA glue)
Sponge
Paint brush
Wood Varnish
I used MDF and this printout of a photo of colourful umbrellas in Laos
Method
Sand the piece of wood to give a smooth surface.
Paint the wood block black (or other colour if you prefer) and allow to dry.
Trim the picture so that it is exactly the same size as the wood block.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the wood with the sponge.
Mod Podged and ready to stick the image on
Carefully lay the image on top of the Mod Podge and press down, smoothing out any small bubbles.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the top of the image using the sponge.
Allow to dry then apply 2 more thin layers of Mod Podge (allowing to dry each time) all over the image and the edges of the block to seal.
When dry, give a thin layer of spray wood varnish to get a glossy finish.
