Handmade Picture Clip

Create your own clip holder to display a postcard or photo. It could also be used to hold small notes on an office desk or hold a name place card at a table.

Materials
  • Silicone ice cube tray
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Disposable tub to mix the plaster in.
  • Wire
  • Metal crocodile clip (from hardware store)

  • Method
  • Cut a length of wire, fold it over and twist both strands together along the length. Fold the twisted wire over and twist together the two strands. You should end up worth one piece of thick twisted wire.

  • Fix one end into the metal crocodile clip.

  • Decide how tall you want your clip to be (mine was about 6cm) and twist any excess wire at the end into a small flat clump.

  • Mix the plaster of Paris in a disposable tub according to the pack instructions. Mine was 2 parts plaster of Paris to one part water.
  • Pour the plaster into a cavity in the silicone ice cube tray.
  • Leave to set for 10 minutes or so and then push in the clump end of the wire. Ensure the wire is straight and let go once it's able to stand up unsupported.

  • Leave for several hours then pop out of the mould.

  • Sand any rough edges off gently with sandpaper if needed.

  • I liked the industrial look of the plaster and wire. However if you want to make a coloured stand, try adding several spoonfuls of coloured powder tempera (poster) paint to the plaster powder before adding the water.
