IKEA Expedit

Whether you love or hate IKEA, the Expedit shelving unit is surely a classic. With the recent announcement that the unit is going out of production, it becomes all the more iconic. It's shelves are exactly the right dimensions for holding vinyl LPs, making it a unit loved by record collectors worldwide. Tens of thousands joined a Facebook protest in the first few weeks following the news about the discontinuation of the Expedit.

The Expedit

The units are minimalist and versatile. Use them on their own to hold books or display ornaments. Add boxes to create clothes storage in a bedroom. I like the deep open shelving to hold paints and craft supplies in our playroom. They can even be used as room dividers as they look good from any angle.

Great open storage for all my craft supplies!

The units are long lasting and incredibly good value. I had two 4x4 units but recently sold one on EBay when we moved house. I was amazed at the resale value - mine was over 10 years old and had weathered 6 house moves across 3 countries. Even with quite a bit of visible wear and tear, my unit sold for over £40.

With the news from IKEA that the Expedit's days are numbered, not all is lost. The "Kallax", a sleeker version using less materials is on it's way.

I fully agree.
I am sold over to Ikea from way way back, when they first came to Australia.
Not having the room now, I don't have one but yes it is a great bit of furniture.
Glad to hear they are getting something else to replace it.
Such a good company, and listening to what people want and need.
I have enclosed a pic of the New ''Kallax'' see what you think!
